Hemp Dosing: How Much Should I Take?

Our bodies are unique and as with food and exercise, we must pay close attention to learn what works with our physiology.

So, how do you know where to start with hemp extract? A great rule of thumb: “start low, go slow.”

Several factors should be considered when beginning your hemp journey. First and foremost: what is the format you’re using? Is it a tincture, a drink mix, an edible, a balm or a soaking salt? Each of these forms will absorb into your body differently.

Delivery Methods

Tinctures used sublingually (under the tongue) are the fastest acting. Cannabinoids pass through mucous membranes and enter the sublingual artery  and take effect in about 15 minutes.

Swallowing hemp extract provides less consistent results. Variables such as your individual physiology and how much you have eaten come into play. After you swallow, the cannabinoids are metabolized in the liver and take effect in 30-90 minutes.

Additional factors to consider are:

  • Age
  • Weight
  • Diet
  • Stress Level
  • Severity of symptoms

There’s really no exact way to predict your ideal dosage. Once you do find that sweet spot, consistency is key. With most plant-based medicine, regular use over a duration of time is what generates the most benefit, not high intensity out of the gate.

Our suggestions on dosing are included below. Always be sure to ask your physician or naturopath if additional questions arise.
